Firstly, I sincerely want to say that talking publicly about mental illness is the best of the best. Admitting that needing help is normal also is the best of the best. And, I certainly commend this young man for openly speaking up whilst helping DECRYING THE STIGMA LINKED TO MENTAL HEALTH. And I honestly wish him the best. However, as professionals who has worked directly with mental health for almost twenty years and now study neuroscience, NO, bipolar disorder or any mental illness is 'like diabetes' or any other physical problem, serious or not. Physical ailments or illnesses have a clear trajectory, we can make predictions in many cases, and we can treat the same exact illness with the same medications. Mental health disorders are much more unpredictable, what works for one person does not work for others, making prediction s is hard, and so is coming up with correct diagnoses. In several cases like bipolar and major depressive disorders violence and impulsivity play a serious role for patients and their families/friends. In several cases doctors did nit even look into thyroid dysfunction before coming up with diagnosis, thereby delaying correct diagnosis for years. It is important to know 30% of diagnosis in mental health can be incorrect, that even more of of 30% of patients may not respond to drugs, that combined approaches from diet, exercises, and drugs along with psychotherapy are n needed in order to help these patients and their families. My point is, make sure that you get thorough physical and psychiatric evaluations. As a professional who has witnessed the results of delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, do NOT just trust a doctor if he/she comes up with a mental diagnosis in a suspiciously short time and starts prescribing drugs,. AVOID GPs and see specialists, ask how diet and exercises can be implemented to further support you body and brain. Drugs are not a joke, and the liver pays a heavy price. So, please, be mindful! MTV used to play Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It" video so much during the summer of 1984 that they made me sick of the song.
